Frontier is pretty good but I'm not sure from NY. my wife and I are getting to LA from MPLS for under $400 round trip and both of us.

I booked directly with Southwest on my last DTW-LAS flight and saved about $40/ticket over what Orbitz, Expedia, etc showed.
