Hey guys. I have a 1999 Ford Contour with 86,000 miles. The check engine light came on today. I had Autozone check for the service code and it came out:

"P1131 - Manufacturer Control Fuel Air Metering"

Any idea what the problem may be? Can I troubleshoot it and fix it myself?

Thanks guys!

if i am not mistaken the 1131 refers to the o2 sensor on the front bank. basically you need a new one, atleast thats what i was told when my 99 csvt w/ 86000 miles threw a 1131 & 1151 recently. from what i understand it should be easy to fix yourself. i have not changed mine yet so i cannot say. soon enough others will post regarding whether or not i'm talking out my a--.

P1131 is the REAR (firewall) side upstream O2 sensor.

SEARCH on "P1131" for multiple threads on how to replace the sensor.

I cannot find how to change the O2 sensor.

I have a 1999 Ford Contour L4-122 2.0L DOHC SFI

Also, should I have anything else tested?

Ps. That's odd - the check engine light just went off...what's that all about?

P1131 Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 1.

The O2 simply unscrews from the exhaust manifold between the engine and the radiator.

Since this engine only has one O2 for fuel metering, there is no simple way to tell if the O2 is bad or if there is another problem affecting the mixture.

Standard procedure for this code would mean cleaning the MAF, looking for vacuum leaks, and changing the O2.

The CEL will come and go as the running conditions change.
