1998 Contour LX, 2.0, Automatic.

My temperature guage works sometimes and sometimes not. Is this a common problem? How do I troubleshoot this?? Can this affect the operation of the radiator fan???

Thank You for your help.

No.
Could be poor connection at temp gauge sender or in wiring to/at instrument cluster.
No, fans controlled by PCM with input from ECT sensor.

Two things
1) temperaure sender -to the gauge
2) temerature sensor -to the ECU
Both are located by the thermostat housing. #1 seems to be a common problem - test it , replace it , Ford part , DIY easy all will be well......while your in there 180* thermostat. And all will be even better!

My engine is a 4 cylinder Zetec. (Standing in front of the car looking at the engine) I found one sensor on the top left side of the valve cover (with a rubber cover and 2 bare wires underneath)and one on the right hand side of the engine with no cover.

I seperated the bare wires, unplugged and re-plugged both plugs and the temperature guage still doesn't work. I am going to check the fuses but I don't think that one fuse would be dedicated to the one sensor or gauge. ???

The connector on the left end of the valve cover is for the VCT solenoid. The one to the right of the engine, near the coil pack is the ECT sensor, which is mounted on the top of the thermostat housing.

The temperature sender under the two hoses connected to the front of the t-stat housing. I believe it has a single wire going into it.

What is VCT & ECT?

I found a sensor under the hose in the thermostat housing with 2 wires. How do I troubleshoot the problem? Are the sensors expensive to replace?

Thank You,
