My 96 Mystique overheats if I drive it over 15 mins. ( 10 mins. on a hot day )
Thermostat has been changed 2 times already, no change.
When I check under the hood, the electric fans don't start until the temperature gauge is right at the red mark. Is this normal?
And what is controlling when the fans will start?
Would it make a difference if the fans would be running all the time? I'm thinking of jumping them so they do...
Thanks in advance!

Yeah, what he said! Get that pump changed before you drive it another inch.
The waterpump in on the drivers side, remove the front engine cover and you'll see the belt there on the right. If you remove the battery, you'll have easy access to DIY. Make sure you get a white plastic impeller model NOT the black. If they have metal, that's okay too. But I prefer the white impeller version. Get a new waterpump gasket too.
Are you good with your hands? If so, one look at the waterpump and you'll figure it out.
If the pump is bad once you remove it there might be shards of the old impeller right there in the pump opening. Fish them out as best you can the install the new pump and immediately go to a shop or DIY if you can and powerflush the cooling system to remove any smaller impeller pieces you see.
The cooling fans might not be going on since the system if overheating too fast. The coding of the computer isn't keeping up with the rapid temp rise.
Good luck!!

I had a problem with my ECT sensor. My fans would not come on until the engine was in the upper normal range. Changed ECT and they come on earlier - check resistence on ECT, computer reported mine bad which it was......

Reading your post a little closer I do wonder if it's the waterpump at all. Sorry, I didn't want to scare you with that last post.
It should heat up a lot faster if the waterpump is bad. It very well may be the ECT.
All old black plastic impeller waterpumps will go bad however.... but you may not need to change it just yet

A bad relay, resistor, or wiring can also keep the fan from coming on. It sounds like your low speed fan is not coming on at all, and when you reach the red on the gauge you are getting hot enough to kick on the high speed fan. The low speed fan should have kicked on before you ever reach the red on the gauge.

When my waterpump went bad...my fans didnt kick on till it was almost to the red mark. And when I was sitting idling the temp would go down, but when driving go back up. It was really wierd. I would suggest maybe just having the checked to be on the safe side.

What engine do you have? On my 96 Zetec the fans don't come on till after the "L". Therefore I'm going to guess that we are talking about the Zetec. For the record. On my car the fans come on @ 211 degrees. That is like I said Just above the "L". As for overheating though? Make sure there is no air in the system. I solved my problem by changing the Thermostat housing and all the sensors. Easy repair and it can be done and cleaned up from in under an hour. Shouldn't cost more then $150 if you do it yourself. Should really be less so shop around for the parts if you choose to go this route. Again. I'm making the assumption this is the Zetec.
