I found my serpentine belt was 1/2 its normal width today. The pulley on the A/C compressor is loose, causing the belt to walk around, and get chewed up. I don't want to spend nearly $1000 to get it fixed, so I am thinking of getting a shorter belt, so I can bypass the compressor. My Ford dealer said the belt from the V6 without air wouldn't work. Anybody have any ideas?

Yeah, if you have a V6, you can get the non AC belt and it will work.. but if its hot where u live See if you can tighten the compressor pully or sumthin, first.. and dont get the belt from a dealership, get it from Advanced Auto, or Autozone.. saves money..

Thanks, I will try it tomorrow. It can get hot here, but the fix is too expensive. I will get another car. At least I can still get around in this one, if I get the short belt.

P.S. How can it be tightened? It seems to work on the compessor it has to come out. The bolts that hold the assembly together are tight, but the pulley wobbles around.

Okay to tighten the belt you mean, you use the belt tensioner, tighten that down.

the belt tensioner is spring loaded, it tightens itself.

No, after you remove the belt from the car and put it back on you have to tighten the tensioner, just like you have to loosen it to get the belt off.

Yep
No, the belt tensioner on a Duratec V6 (such as the original posted has) most definitely is spring loaded, and does not need to be loosened or tightened down changing the belt. I have no idea about the Ztec I4.
