I'm just looking for anyone in the area who can give me some kind of a hint on what is going on with my tranny. I was supposed to go down to TN to see my brother this morning but last night when shifting from 3rd to 4th my shifter was completely free. It felt as if my shift cables had broken (its happened before about 3 months ago) but they hadn't. The linkage on the tranny seems as if it is getting no contact with the shift forks. The clutch engages and disegages fine, the side to side cable works fine but the front back cable doesn't appear to be moving anything internally on the trans. Before this happened I was having to push a lil' harder to get it into 1st and 2nd so it wouldn't grind. I was thiking it was just the shift cables that needed to be adjusted(not the case). Is this a possible case of a broken shift fork? Has anyone else had this happen to your tranny? Any suggestions are helpfull, either PM me or post. I just had the tranny rebuilt when i did the 3L swap in october.

You are saying it was rebuilt in Oct and you are grinding? That seems sketch.

I took the shift tower apart today but can;t get it out b/c its not in neutral. When i turn the shift shaft that runs down in the tranny it just moves completley free as if its not touching anything. I've been told it sounds like a broken shift fork or shift shaft.

Sounds like you are gonna have to pull the trans.
I say give terry a call. I think it's either the shifter forks or the bolt on the tower.

Sheared bolt in the shift tower! Classic symptoms.
It is possible to fix without pulling the trans, although you have to pull the tranny mount to remove the tower. If you wiggle it enough it should slip into neutral.
But if it is the bolt, be sure you find the bolt head and fish it out before you install a new shift tower.

check the tranny mount bolt(s)....it could be broken and the tranny could be sitting on the subframe. if this is so, the linkage on the tranny probably is not on completely....just a thought...

Yea i already had the shift tower cover off but i really can't get the shift tower out. I tried wiggeling fanageling prying even abra kadabra that didn't work. so i'll pull the engine and trans hopefully tommarrow or wednsday. replace that shnit and be oon my way. I thought i was gonna be out of a car but i got our 90' E250 Club Wagon with th 351 Windsor going yesterday. that thing is so fun to cruise around in i swear you can fit like 30 people in there.

Steve have you had to doe this before? Is that what you did to get your shift tower out, If that is all that would be pimp with a capital P.

Indeed.
Jack up the engine/tranny through a 2x6 just enough to take the weight off the mount first.
