On my way home from work the other day, as I would accelerate thru the RPM range, a clanking noise became louder from under my hood. Kind of like a machine gun only is sounded like it matched the sound of the engine. I did not get any warning lights i.e low oil or check engine, when i got home my dipstick said there was no frickin oil in it! I thought that my dipstick might be screwed up but I dont know. I was just wondering as to the possibilities and if anyone else has encountered these SVT Contours burning oil or something happening to it. I do use Mobil 1 fully synthetic if that is any help at all too. Any feed back would be great. thanks

When was the last time you checked the level before this incident ? Any obvious points of oil leakage ?
I am not an expert but your description sounds like a spun bearing from lack of oil.

You know, we get so used to those idiot lights that we often forget the bulb-check feature when you first turn the key.
Drain the oil and see how much you get.

To me sounds like it was just knocking from low oil..
Spun bearing is nastyyy nasttyyyy nasttyyy...
Whens the last time you changed / checked it?
If its been a LONG while then thats the answer..
Keep an eye on the oil level after you change the oil / filter, make sure you check it every week, or 300 miles.
Use any filter but fram.. lol
Fram = garbage . IMHO
Change your oil @ 2,500 for the next change, and see how much comes out / color, etc.
Same amount or a little less = OK
1-2 quart less = Big Problem
If your driving like Speedracer, id quit.. before something big happens... Like siezed engine, broken tranny, etc.
Just my 2 cents.

Don't overlook a plug that's come loose. The same think happened to me and I was scared it was gonna be major. Dealer looked at it and all it was was a plug needing tightening.

Well, the oil has been officially changed and the knocking hasnt ceased. I am curious as to what a spun bearing is, where it is, and on average the price of repair with or without labor. I plan on taking it somewhere on Wednesday so it will sit in my garage until I can have it looked at but still wanted some info. Thanks

Roughly a few thousand dollars more than you're willing to spend. Start looking at your options:
- New engine (hah!) - Used engine - Rebuild engine - 3L

It's a bearing that makes one expensive part move smoothly around another very expensive part. When the bearing gets dry, as it would if there is not enough oil, one expensive part wears out the other expensive part. Odds are good that the bearings between the piston connecting rods and the crankshaft are worn to a frazzle, which lets the connecting rod bounce and bang against the crankshaft. This is probably the knock that you are hearing. If the problem developed because of low oil (which is what it sounds like), you probably have a lot of wear on all of the moving parts in the engine. $$$$$
