I'm posting this on the long shot that somebody in STL area can help or give advice who can help with my cat gutting including the deinstall and welding/cutting part. Doesn't seem like a job for an ordinary mechanic.

I have the p0420 code and intend to gut the cats and put MILs in. I'm not doing it just to gain 2 hp or better sounds although that would be nice.

Actually, I would travel to somewhere to have it done by somebody who likes beer or $$$ and has done it before. Just name your beer. I have done struts/springs/brakes/etc but I'm nervous about this one and would like help from somebody who has done it.

I have a gutted pair,(the front manifold was cut in half to make sure it was completely clean and welded back together) plan on putting them on my car someday. I would consider taking your old ones (so I can clean out) and some cash and sending you my gutted pair. Just a thought.

I need new cats and I was told it will be $1200 to get it all done. I will fail emissions (again) if I dont do this. If I get gutted cats and put in MIL's will I pass?

if you had MIL's you would pass providing they are just doing the OBD II test. but if they are doing the tail pipe test you may or may not pass.

The OBDII is what is failing me right now. I think I read somewhere on the papers that the next time I get tested they arent testing my tailpipe after failing the first time on OBDII. Im not exactly sure on that, but I need to get this out of the way without spending more than the worth of the car.

Thanks. I think I'm going to need help with the install and can't have my car down for even one single day cuz I drive it round trip 2 hours daily plus more on the weekends. Appreciate the reply.

To do this you only have to take the front off to gut it, the back can be gutted with it on the car There is a couple different ways you can gut the front. The easiest way and the way I do it is to cut it in half with a band saw and clear it and weld it back together. I can do it with help in about 5 hours, but this is a PITA to-do by yourself

I worry about those horror stories associated with gutting a pre-cat while still on the car. Particles get sucked up into the engine throught he exhaust port and then all bets are off?
Have you done this successfully?
