Nice setup, although I don't like the visible drivers through the rear window.

The only otherproblem I see is that since he has an automatic, he has room for those kick panels in the footwell.

This got me thinking more..which might be a bad thing...what are the advantages to this setup over a enclosure.

Trunk space and installation(if you are building a custom box) are the 2 that come to mind.

Those are the main advantages. If you can find a way to completely seal the cabin you will lose the ease of installation aspect, but will get tremendous transient response and very deep bass extension because you essentially end up with a huge sealed enclosure.

I am not a fan of infinite baffle systems for several reasons. They are very unpredictable since the sound waves can travel in unusual paths. They don't allow you the ability to tune them. Not to mention your box volume will be constantly changing when you use the trunk. If you can't spare the trunk space they are a compromise to consider, but don't expect the nice tight sound of well designed sealed chamber.

If you spend the money to completely seal the front from rear chambers, you can definitely expect the "tight" sound that a sealed chamber offers, in fact, it should be tighter (lower Q) if you use the right sub. You can also tune them with EQing (not a consumer EQ but instead a custom EQ made for that application). Having stuff in your trunk will not change the sound noticeably. Besides having stuff in your trunk with any sub will technically change the subs sound.
