Hi all,
I know I have a problem with my IMRC. Here is a description of the problem:
- 1995 Contour SE 2.5 ATX
- start cold car, let it warm up while driving conservatively.
- when slightly warmed up and when I mash the pedal I have power from when secondaries opening.

vs.

-when the engine is well warmed up and when I mash the pedal, power does not come when secondaries open. Just the scream of climbing revs.

After researching potential problems and fixes I have determined that the IMRC rod which controls the secondaries is sticking when the engine bay is hotter.

However, here is the dilemna. I drive conservativley 95% of the time. I have long commutes (40km) each day and tend to conserve money by conserving gas. I have experienced a slight gain in mileage since I have had the IMRC problem and am not needing the power that the secondaries provide for most driving, although the gain may be due to other factors. In fact, with 300 000+ kms on the car, it may be difficult justifying the repair if it will be costly ($140 for new IMRC unit). I intend to drive the car into the ground (over time) but wish to maintain it mechanically should for a small fee (the great battle).

Here is my question. Will not fixing the IMRC problem cause other problems with fuel/engine management? Is there an easy fix (done by myself) to control the sticking rod on the vaccum actuated IMRC?

Please understand that at this stage in the cars life I wish to keep the car on the road but not too spend too much money. I have thoroughly enjoyed owning and driving this car and the maintenance of it has been easy to perform and pay for. I just don't want to spend money if I can't justify it.

TIA,
Chris

The 95 does not have an "IMRC unit".

The 95's system has an EVR and a dashpot to move the rod. Problems here normally cause the secondaries to stay open.

Since the original intake gaskets will be shot by now, a good cleaning of the intakes, throttle body, and gasket replacement should be in your future. This should fix any tendency of the secondaries to stick.

Your problem may not even be the secondaries. It may be fuel starvation, a vacuum leak, MAF problems...

Remove and plug the vacuum line to the dashpot or disconnect and pin the linkage open. This will keep the secondaries open at all times. See if the problem persists.

Are you sure your secondaries are opening? Have you checked the linkage to see if the clips aren't worn out, or gone altogether?
