If you're still thinking about the Gran Prix, I'd recommend you take it to a trusted mechanic and get his opinion on it, and his estimate of how much money it would take to get it into reliable shape for the period of time you intend to drive it. You have to balance that cost against the cost of fixing up your Camry. General Motors makes decent cars, and most of them should last for 200,000 miles if they are given proper care. Toyota obviously has a good reputation, and I know people with over 300,000 miles on Toyota products. You really need to talk to your mechanic about both cars and put your faith in his recommendations. another factor to think about: if you buy the GP, can you get any money out of the Camry if you sell it? If so, that could give you a few bucks toward fixing up the GP.

A GP is taunting you? I know it can't be taunting you to drive it,, so is it calling you names or something? I would kick its butt.

Here's some reference items: CarSurvey.org

"Rusts too quickly!"

"If you're looking for problems, you won't have trouble finding them here."

I like this one:

"Should come with a map to the repair shop."

Isn't '97 the first MY for that body style? A friend had one and it nickel and dimed him in typical GM fashion. My personal favorite was the headlight cover falling off at ~3 months old.

If a Pontiac Grand Prix ever taunted me, I would probably go home and self-medicate.
