The Duratec is a non-interference motor meaning that if it senses knock or unordinary time advance or retard the computer will back off the timing or advance it in order to keep the piston from smacking the head or valves...However , its not a failsafe fix..
especially, if it had not been started in months...Replace the rockers, lifters, and valve springs. Check the valves for being bent or pitted. If so replace. Or just find some used low mile heads and forego all the crap.
It sounds like oiling could have been an issue (understatement!) but it had to be something real extreme to have caused this type of failure. Are you sure it had not already happened nine months ago?? Sounds like a real hard drive had or HAS taken place since youve put in the shop!
