My "premium" stereo sucks. I can barely hear it 3/4 volume with the window down at highway speeds. My freinds taurus we can hear at 1/4 volume with the window down. Stock. What gives? Bad amp. It sounds fairly clear. With the window up. Still under warranty. Should I take it in. They'll just tell me I am deaf cheers

Install an aftermarket unit and by-pass the amp. You will get much better sound quality with just about any aftermarket head unit running the speakers than the stock "premium"(yeah, right) setup.

Nope its just he stock unit sucks. If your not looking for anything major as far as a system go with a new head unit, bypass the amp and get some 5x7 speakers for the doors. That would be nice and simple it all depends on how much power and sound you want. You can add amps/subs the works if you wanted to but it all starts with the HU. The stock speakers aren't that bad for midbass. The speakers would be the second thing to replace and then maybe adding an amp and subs.

In order of upgrades that provide the most bang for the buck.
Head unit Add sub/amp combo Door speakers (these used to be number two but as Pollo mentioned, they have decent midrange that is why I ranked the sub ahead of it. If you are on a serious budget, keep the stock speakers and add some tweeters up front.
