Hello All...

A fellow work colleague has a '98 contour that is throwing the following codes.

P1380 - VCT Solenoid Valve circuit Short or Open.
P1381 - Cam Timing Advance is excessive.

She just starting getting these codes and the stealership is saying "...the car drives fine, we can't find anything wrong, keep driving it and if the light doesn't go away put tape over it..."

Can you believe this?!

Has anyone had experience with these codes before?

I have a '95 and have never seen these before....

Hehe funny! I've been told something similar by a Chevy dealer. AS per my experience, most of the CELs I've gotten haven't made a lick of difference. I usually reset the PCM to see if it comes back...if not then you're good to go.

To reset it, either d/c the (-) battery terminal or pull out fuses 4 and 11 for 30 seconds or so.

I think someone had this before, their timing belt became streched out and and messed up the cam timing.

I think a new timing belt would fix it.

Sorry but no, the VCT solenoid has burned out or the wiring has a fault.

Use a meter to check the VCT coil at the connector on top of the valve cover. If it is open, it should be replaced.

You might want to try this troubleshooting step:
While the engine is idling, disconnect the electrical plug going to the solenoid. I believe that if the VCT is working the smoothness of the idle should change indicating that the VCT is doing something.
