I need new tires for the Lexus and can't find the stock size in a tire I like. I did find the tire I like, but in a slightly larger size.
I am going from 215/45/17 to 225/45/17.
How much will this effect my odometer. I know my speed will be off about 1 mph, but can't find a calculator that will tell me miles.
Thanks
Jim

I don't think tire width will affect your speedo.

225/45/17 is not only wider, but also taller than 215/45/17. Its deceptive because both list the height as 45, but you have to realize that that number is a ratio of the width, and consequently will be taller with a wider tire. You can go to tire rack or any tire manufacturer's website and see the spec for individual tires. It shouldn't affect your speedo more than a 1-2 mph at 60.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here (pertaining to my assumptions of how an odometer works & records mileage)...
215/45/17 diameter - 625.3 mm
225/45/17 diameter - 634.3 mm
*circumferences are of the same proportion
So your odometer should record [(625.3/634.3) x 100] = 98.58 miles for every 100 miles you travel.

Both of the above are reasons why I don't sell tires.
I didn't know about the whole width/diameter/flux capacitor ratio thing. I always figured 45 is a 45 is a 45. Go figure.
Thanks for the info.

According to the infamous Miata tire size calulator, your size difference is 1.4% too slow. If the indicated speed is 60MPH, actual speed is 60.9MPH. Not like any of our speedos are accurate anyway. But the indicated speed will be lower than actual speed. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.htmlIt was in the FAQ. Check it out next time.
