I was wondering whether or not I could use one of those APC Air Breather Filter things in place of my 2.5L's PCV Tube?

That tube that is located near the front of the engine that goes from the valve cover to the air box, and is mostly consealed underneath the water pump cover, has fallen apart on me and broke in two places.

I checked all the local wreckers and they don't have any. I also called Ford and they want $30(Canadian) for a new one!

So, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that tube basically useless? I'm 99% sure that all it does is insure that the small amount of vacuum that is present at the valve cover connection is always sucking-in clean air, and that's why the other end is connected past the air cleaner/filter. So if I just took the tube off and replaced it with an Air Breather Filter, wouldn't that just do the exact same thing??

If you're not sure what an APC Air Breather looks like, go to www.4apc.net and select "Filters" and then just scroll down...

Anyone have any input?

THANKS!:)

Yes, you can do that. I have a breather filter there and so do a lot of the CEGers.

Cool, thanks...so did you just take off that entire tube? What did you do about the hole that is left on the air intake assembly?

You mean the crank case hose. I went to canadian tire and bought
3/8 PCV/Fuel line hose for 5 bucks. Kept the plastic ends and ran it.

You forgot about the MAF.

The air is measured by the MAF - if it is not, the mixture will be off.

so true. i had made me a cool looking valve cover breather but than after reading all the post about how the air is metered i took it off. im going to make me a pcv oil seperator this weekend.

Any open vents (either cam cover vent or the PCV system) will let un-metered air into the system.

Also using breathers will allow the PCV valve to stay open because it lets that un-metered air be sucked in behind it.
When the PCV stays open it eventually starts sucking raw oil into the intakes.

That is very bad for many reasons. A major one is even a minor drop in oil level from full can cause engine failure at high rpm!

Others include worse ring sealing and performance loss. Positive ventilation is a good thing.

So if I remove the PCV vent tubes from my intake and put breathers...that would work? I assume you need an oil seperator so you wouldn't have oil get out and on the engine bay. Anyone have a photo with the breather on so I can just see what it is exactly we are talking about here?

Did you even read my post at all???

Venting the valve covers to the atmosphere is bad for many reasons.

Yes I did, oil gets sucked into the intake anyway. That is why I asked. At high rpm oil will go through the vents and into the intake. It didn't sound right since oil would just be free in the engine bay, therefor I asked a question.
