I'm posting this here since it's car related and someone may have experience with this or know someone who had. Anyways, my father's 1999 Intrigue which has only 60k on it suddenly started making a very strange and very loud noise from the engine which neither of us can figure out (loud enough that you'd be scared to drive it). So he brought it in to the dealership and there's no word on what it is yet but our guess is it's something in the engine and its going to be quite expensive.
Now, this car has had all sorts of issues since new, like doors not bend properly creating turbulance noise which could not be perfectly fixed, a/c compressor noise, etc etc. What can the lemon law do for him? Is this a lemon law issue? How expensive is it and is it best to just contact a lawyer from the beginning? And help would be great, thanks.

Not up GM's warranties, but if he is in warranty, I don't see a problem. For more concrete advice, I think the site is www.lemonaidcars.com. Phil Edmonston actually replies to e-mails, and can be very helpful.

What is the noise? Could it be the dreaded GM Piston slap issue? Is it just a pulley. Please describe the noise. Maybe someone on the site will know what it is.

In Canada the governing body that deals with this stuff is called CAMVAP. Give them a try. It stands for something but I cannot remember but if you search the internet you will find them.

Ok I'll check info from the 2 mentioned sources. The car is no longer under warranty. The problem is with the tranny for sure they say. The labour involved will be for sure not less than over $600 for sure and that's not including parts. Worst case, it'll end up costing over $3000 for a rebuilt tranny plus labour and taxes which will bring it to $4500-$5000. For a car with only 60k on it. And the 60k doesn't mean it's parked much, it's driven normally.
And get this, GM didn't even give him a loner car even though it has to be there until monday or tuesday. So I phoned them asking if they give loners and the answer was yes (even when not under warranty). We drove there and he asked why they didn't offer the loner. He service guy said they don't do that!!! I told him it's really poor service since the bill is over $600 already and nothing's done or even looked at yet. Then I told him I phoned and asked about loners and he said it's only under warranty. I told him no, because I asked if it has to be and the answer was no. He said they don't have a loner to give. Finally after more argueing he went to talk to the person I talked to on the phone and a few minutes later we had a loner ... and the lady I talked to on the phone said of course they can always give loners. Nice sh!ty service from the service guy isn't it.

Just a small update for those interested in reading ... to fix the transmission it came to a little over $3100 total. This is not a rebuilt, just fixed. From what I found out, the lemon law wouldn't help here since the car was bought in august 1999 ... too old. It'll most likely be sold now.

jesus after all this annoyance. I'm not sure if I'd keep it or sell it. Either way I wouldn't wanna buy from that dealership you took it too.

sorry about your dads (bad) luck
