I installed eibach pro-kit springs over the summer. I did it myself but had the springs put on the struts professionally. But when I put my struts back in and screwed everything down tight those black caps that sit on top of the strut towers were loose. I had to take them off and tighten down the strut bolt. This fixed the looseness but I remember the caps sitting right on the paint with the rubber ring touching when I had my stock springs. Now they don't. I dont understand why. Is there a reason for this or has anyone else had this happen? I shake the car around and see the strut move slightly from on top of the tower. Any suggestions? Steve

The bottom nut, that holds the strut together when the spring is compressed, is a lower profile nut. If, a "Nyloc Nut", the one holding the retainer to the strut tower, is used in the lower position, the rubber ringed retainers center portion, will bottom out on the taller profile nut before the retainers rubber portion touches the tower, as viewed from the top. I made this mistake the first time I did my struts.

That could very well be my problem. Thanks a lot I'll check that out.

crap i just checked and i have the correct nuts but the caps still dont sit on the strut tower. Does that mean I need to get new strut mounts? I guess I'll have to save up a few hundred and get new struts while I'm at it and then another hundred or two for labor. there is no way I am pulling the front struts out myself ever again my car seems to be worse than others when it comes to the front suspension. this sucks i hate the contour front suspension. maybe I am completely wrong but i couldnt get any mechanic to even take a look at my car. they are too [censored] full of themselves and think they know exactly what is wrong with it.

I have the same problem after changing the front strutts last year. I never noticed it until now. I think that I need new rubber mounts, since it only occurs when the vehicle weight is on the suspension. How did you make out?

I'd think that the strut hats which are what the front springs pivot on are worn out.

Commom occurence when doing the suspension. We had to swap nuts and stuff to get it to work on my car, and it still doesn't look quite the same way it did, but it's fine.

Changed the bearings and upper mounts. Made sure to use shortest nuts and no washers on top of the mounts. The mounts and bearings are sold together. List for $90 a set, but can be gotten for $50. All is well.
