On my drive in from work today my transmission started acting up. When I acclerate from a stop, the rpm goes up but the car acclerates really slow. It eventually picks up speed but doesn't shift to higher gear. Rpm keeps going up as the speed goes up. Same thing on the way down, rpm comes down as the speed comes down but I don't feel it changing gears. It feels like I only have second (or third?) gear.
I checked transmission fluid and it looked normal. It's a 1995 Contour with the 2.5L engine and 125,000 miles.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

my old sunbird did this
first gear was gone when it got warm, i sold the car as is as it had 220,000 km on it, orginal exhaust, battery, 2nd set of rubber (bald) but i paid 1200$ for it, lasted 3 years and all it took was oil changes, only had brakes done once at 140,000 km
someone suggested to tranny fluid filter could have been clogged, but i think first gear was just gone, it was an atx, rev up on acceleration, then id get a bang and start moving when it shifted to 2nd

Sounds like your transmission is going out anyway... better save up just if your transaxle decides to crap out...

My brother had a 1992 Chryslet Lebaron and at about 130K the transmission started to act up, when you would drive it, the engine would rev hard in the first gear, then act like it tryed to hit the 2nd gear but after just a couple of seconds just give up and go right for 3rd giving a stiff jolt and everything was fine after that gear... Maybe you need your transmission rebuilt.

Got the car back from the dealer and it looks like I need a new transmission. They quoted $3800 for rebuilding. I checked around and another transmission shop quoted $2600. Just wondering if it's worth it since it already has 125K miles on it. What do you guys think? I took good care of the engine (Mobile 1 oil changes) and transmission (trans fluid change every 40K miles at the dealer). Still the transmission goes out on me . Also, if I do decide to rebuild, can any of you recommend a good trans. shop in the northers Chicago suburbs? Anything else I should have the shop do while they're rebuilding? Thanks.

Has it only done it that one time??
B/c I'm sure you would have thought of this. But one time in my brotehrs ATX contour I had this problem. I had accidently just put the gear selector in 2!!! Ooops.
But if it's only happened once. And it was fine later in the day....I don't know. Just a thought.

The invoice from the dealer has the following transmission codes: PO645, 628 and 229. Anyone know what these codes mean? This weekend I used the car to run errands and the car ran flawlessly. If the transmission is bad, wouldn't it act up all the time? The true test will be tomorrow when I take it on my long drive to work and back (110 miles round trip). Good thing I have AAA . Thanks

On my 1995 ford contour if I put it into 2nd gear it stays in 2nd gear no matter what even from a dead stop and the rpms jump a bit and acceleration is poop when this happens............ If you accidently put it right inbetween 2nd and drive it mayt be closer to the 2nd gear and decide to stay in 2nd gear had this happen 2 times I was real confused.......
