I have a 96 Countour GL 2.0L DOHC.Last week I started to hear an almost grinding sound coming from the area of the power steering pump,a/c area. I cleaned and replaced the p.s fluid. Noise was still there. Took it to a mechanic who said my compressor clutch needed to be looked at/replaced. I dont use my a/c anyway. Im going to replace my serp belt but am wondering if i can get the smaller belt that doesnt have the a/c acc and bypass the compressor?" Today on my way home I smelled smoke and on arrival at home I was smoking really bad. Popped the hood and smoke was coming off my compressor. Need help! sorry this post is so long.

Sorry just need clarification.

I have A/C. But I can use the smaller belt (w/o AC) and totally bypass the compressor? Can I leave the compressor intact or am I going to have to remove it?Will the smaller belt require any modification or throw any timing off?

Heres what happened with me.

My serp. belt squealed a whole bunch. I brought in it and they were going to replace the belt. The guy asked if I had A/C I said yes, the reason he asked for is because they make two different belts.

If you buy one that was made for a car without A/C you simply dont wrap it around the pulley thing. Look on your strut hub by the coolant tank, you will find a belt routing diagram right there.

You can just leave the A/C thing on there, I think.

Was the pulley on the A/C compressor red hot? You will snap the belt if it continues to do that, it sounds like the compressor is locked up. Its an awful smell too You might get by with using the shorter belt, but the compressor might interfere with it.

It was my vehicle-I would buy a replacement AC compressor and swap them out. I believe you can remove your compressor and buy the shorter belt-but I will warn you that you should cap your old lines-in the future if you ever want to go back the other way (sell the car etcâ?¦) You can pick up a reasonably priced compressor off ebay or www.car-parts.com. I would strongly suggest using the OEM set-up, getting a new belt and leaving it at that. If you are worried about the compressor failing again-you can always pull the AC relay under the hood and the compressor will never lock up again.

Good luckâ?¦
