So I think my water pump went out not sure. (and I did search but didnt find what I was looking for) so my car is liking water and geting hot all the way up to the L. So I put it up in the air and drips of water were comeing out of what looked like the water pump, put in the how to and every thing I have seen says its on the top of the car. So is it on the top or the bottom of the car? I called my local auto parts store and they said a new one would be $119. Is that to high? HELP

The water pump is on the driver side of the motor...on top....its the only belt driven accessory on the driver side (you can't miss it)

119 to me sounds pretty high.

I got one for 79 (im sure theres cheaper, and that was good friend discount too)

Shop around if you can.

And don't drive the car at all!

You pry the water pump apart by the way. Take out the battery, then the front plastic engine cover. Now you have access to the pump (where the other end of the belt goes). Remove the bolts remember where the long ones go!

Pry apart the pump and there you go. If it's broken it'll be a black plastic impeller and you should either have shards or large chunks of the impeller right inside the block there. Get it all out, go get a new pump & gasket and put all back together. Add coolant and then go get a power flush to insure all the tiny impeller pieces are flushed out.

Keep your eye on the pump & coolant level for a day or so afterward to make sure it's not leaking and you've got it full correctly.

If all goes well, you'll be back on the road.

BTW, I would avoid another black plastic impeller and perhaps a metal one as well. I hear the metal ones tend to leak around the seals... but that's only what I read...

If you can find a white plastic impeller, you'll be set!

It's a quick fix,and as Nate said, don't let it get hot again or you could cause serious carnage to that 2.5...

Most likely that price is for both pieces, housing and impellor plate, you might not need to replace both,my original'96 was fine.
I paid $99.00 Canadian for mine about a month ago (just the impellor plate and gasket)less core at, our largest auto chain store.ifin-u-no-know.....refill the resivoir alittle bit higher than the full mark to keep that peskey low coolant light off....

Search it out,I found out how to do mine right here on this board.

Can't be fixed - replace it. It's a 30 minute job plus however long it takes to scrape the old gasket off (fricking forever on my car!). NAPA will have the metal pump for ~$70 - had mine in for 1/5 years and 38k miles with no problems.

If the cone inside the pump is loose just firmly press it back into place - you'll see what I mean when you get it open.

Your water pump is not working. Replace it now or pay a lot more for an engine rebuild VERY soon.

Ok so I haves my new one and I am puting it in right now. Had to take a brake for lunch anyways So when you guys say the white ones are the good ones dose that mean the pice on the inside is white? Because the one I am takeing off is white and the one I am puting on is black and brand new. So is this still a good one or am I going to be doing this again in like a year?

That sorta doesn't make sense. The early cars, like yours, had black plastic impeller water pumps from the factory. The white plastic ones came on the later cars.

It seems that someone may have changed the w/pump already on your car. Personally, I wouldn't put a black plastic pump in my car.
