Hi there.
I'm hoping someone can help me. A few days ago the front left wheel spring broke on my 98 Contour.
My mechanic said there's a back order of 4 weeks for the part. He installed a used one.
However, he told me there was a recall on this, but I never received a notice. I'm concerned about having a used one installed, since there's a chance it'll happen again.
Do I have any recourse with Ford on this matter?
Thanks

You mean the coil springs correct?
Yes, there is a recall, maybe if you arent the original owner of the car, or didnt own it when the recall came out you wouldnt have know.
Secondly why not just deal with the used one for 4 weeks, it isnt really that bad is it? If it breaks again go back and tell him.
By the way I hope he replaced BOTH springs with used one, otherwise it may create problems.
Since they will have been used for different amounts of time and maybe in different conditions, your steering may fell odd, because one has more wear than the other.

I don't know if he replaced both. I'm picking up the car tomorrow. I was lucky, because it broke in my driveway. Having used coils makes me edgey, because if it breaks while I'm driving, who the heck knows what could happen. I'm the second owner of the car and bought it from a Ford dealer, but don't recall getting a notice. I understand the recall was sometime in 2001 and I know I asked the dealer the last time I went to him in 2002 if all recalls were done and he said yes. I'm wondering if Ford will do anything for me if I had a mechanic replace them with used. Thanks for your info.

If it breaks while driving you will know it right away, you tire could burst apart. Your steering will be come terrible, your brakes will be acting like [censored].
Just make sure he replaced both of them, I talked to my teacher today st school he said it is a MUST that the springs be replaced in pairs.

Yup, he replaced both springs. He used ones from a 2002 Contour. I looked for any recalls on 2002 for that same problem, but didn't find any. I'll be picking up the car tomorrow. So hopefully it'll be ok. Now I want to see if Ford will do anything for me. Like that'll happen.

Just looked up the note I have added to my owners book. It is called Program # 01M08 On the very last line "Coverage is automatically transferred to future vehicle owners. 10 years from start date of orginal warrnaty date or 150,000 miles. Mine's a 98 also. Paul

I didn't take it to the dealer, because I didn't know what it was. I don't know if Ford will reimburse any of my expense.
Besides, the recall looks almost useless. It's just a protective shield for the springs. What good is that if the springs are already weakened?
My mechanic said there are 2 dozen cars sitting in Ford dealerships here (Toronto) waiting for the back orders of springs. I wonder how many had the shields installed but the things broke anyway.

I'm suprised no one else mentioned this, but, 2000 was the last year Ford made a Contour. Were they from a Cougar?
