The secret to good sound is....
Let's stop buying cheap gear!
I am just kidding. I just wanted to tell a story. A while back when I was in High School there used to be 100W amplifiers made by Sanyo. This amp was like a hundred bucks but I remember it used to sound like a thousand. It was one of the first big amps I ever saw. I had one and I used to connect it to 2 12" , 4 8" and a bunch of m&m tweeters. No crossover! Just the little ones stuck to the tweeters. I took the rear sit off my GTO replaced it with the 12" vegas and I was the best show around school. People spent way more cash before they could even compare to me. Funny thing; I have no idea how I connected it all. I did use monster cable though. Now days it's just so frustrating trying to put a system together. There are so many things to think about and then sometimes you still end up with a crappie sound. Why? Is it acoustics? Is it power? Is it knowledge? or is it just plain luck?

I had a buddy in high school who owned a '70 Chevelle 454SS. He gutted the back seat and built a box so big it took up the whole trunk too. He stuck 3 18" subs from his home stereo in it, and instantly had the loudest car in school. It sounded like sh!t but you could hear it for miles. The only thing that could drown it out was his exhaust-free car at full throttle turning a set of tires into tar, which he did about once a week. Needless to say, the teachers didn't like him very much. People spent more time around his car than they did with any other car, even the brand new Probe GT with a $13000 system. Kind of makes you wonder, what the hell is wrong with teenagers?

In my '90 LX Mustang, I took out the whole rear seat and walled it off right behind the driver and passenger seats. I ran 8-15" Kicker subs (isobarred) off 1 US AMPS 250 Watt. The amp was one of the very first 'cheater' amps on the market. I paid next to nothing for it. I had it bridged to a 1/2 ohm, and it kicked mad a$$. I could put a quarter on the roof of my car and it would bounce a good 4 inches off the roof. I also had a bunch of mids, highs and tweeters runnign off a cheap Coustic amp. I sounded awesome. I too was the show of the school. Funny, but I look back now and laugh that I had that much time on my hannds to do that!!!
