Has anyone placed small subwoofers in the factory cut-outs in the rear package shelf of the Contique? Good/Bad results? Recommendations?

I am considering this as an alternative to a space-hogging stand-alone sub in the trunk. I don't want or need a huge thoom-thoom-thoom that 18" drivers and a gigawatt amp in the trunk would provide, so reasonable ideas, please.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I have one. Details:

It can be done, with the right driver. I won't recommend it with most 8" woofer because it won't be worth the time.

Dave Newman on here has heard it and was impressed. It just adds enough extension that the doors cannot handle. Sound quality dispite free air is excellent. I don't listen to music with low bass hits, but it has happend a time or tow and even I was impressed how clear it sounded.

I've tried it with an 8" Kicker Free Air sub. Didn't like it.

It can be done, but there's a lot of work involved here for it to sound good.

I've actually still got it installed (just not hooked up). I'm thinking of putting in that work this summer to make it sound good.

I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

What kind of amp did you have running the sub? Kicker makes a 'EEM' module for their 'ZR' series amps that is used specifically for freeair subs. It's called an Electronic Enclosure Module and is desgined to make Infinite baffle subs perform like they were sealed. FYI.

I have 2 8" rockfords in my rear deck with a 250 watt RF amp and the sound is awesome.. And make sure when you do a system in a car ya do it right (dynomat) theres nothing worse than hearing a good sounding car inside and then outside it sounds like a fn tin can with a rattlesnake in it..

I was running it with about 100w worth of MTX Pro power. The power was definately not overwhelming, but it was plenty to see that it's gonna take some work for me to be happy.

If I end up making it perform to my tastes, I'll be pushing it with 250w.

I do like the Kicker amps. But, they're incredibly expensive. You can get better amps for the same $$$. I guess some people have got to have their stuff say Kicker, JL Audio, RF, etc... to be happy.

No doubt on the Dynomat...I was driving home yesterday when this green Hon'Die was sounding like your reference to the tin can with snake contained therein. He was cool. Oh yeah.

This is exactly what I did. First buy 2 8" subs that can go in small sealed boxes (.25-.3 cu ft) Kicker Solos are wildly inefficent. I had the Infinity Kappas and was unimpressed. I now have JL 8W3 D4 with dual 4 ohm voice coils wired for a 2 ohm load. I am very satisfied with these. Second, build or have built for you sealed boxes that will fit under the shelf. Mine are trapizoidal to match the angles under there. Third (the scary part) cut two 7" holes in the shelf. One between the seatbelt anchor and the trunk hinge. The other to the outside of the existing hole (in order to make it symmetrical) Fill in the existing hole(I welded in a patch, but I realize that I am crazy) Cut matching holes in the cardboard and carpet cover. Hang the boxes from the shelf. Wire. Enjoy.
In addition to not rattling the trunk, this setup also preserves cargo space.

This is an SQ install and will never compete with 10's or 12's with the seat down for SPL.
