I own a 1997 Contour and have just purchased Micah's pre 98 svt front bumper and some svt side skirts. My question is, will I have to change my stock non svt exhaust inorder to install an svt rear bumper. I have heard that the stock non svt exhaust on my 97 will heat up and melt the svt rear bumper...is this true...do I really have to change my exhaust? If so what are my options in terms of aftermarket exhausts?

its a possibility but who cares what happens on the inside...as long as its not breaking down the bumper

plus the stock exhaust points down anyway right, so how would it do that by pointing at the ground?

I think what u should do is snag an SVT exhaust...they can be had for like $100. That will make it look much better anyway...

the stock exhaust sits right in front of the bumper

no you don't have to change it. Mine currently is stock and I have the SVT exhaust.

the bumper will however get extremely hot. so don't leave it like stock forever. I haven't had any damage so far

just be aware..

edit..

I didn't see the previous post, so yes change it. I figured damage could happen and since it has with someone I'm willing to bet it'll happen to you.

So if you recommend that I replace my exhaust....what are my options in terms of aftermarket exhausts. Can I really get a svt exhaust for $100 (I'm assuming that's American).
Anyone in Canada with any exhaust hook ups? Can I get away with a single exhaust setup instead of duals? Any addded advice would be greatly appreciated

people practically give svt exhaust systems away. I picked up mine for $40, and that was from a junkyard! Only 3000 miles on the system. I've seen people on here sell them for about $25 (at least in the MI area) or they give them away for free. Hard part is just figuring out how to get it to your place since they are too big to ship.

OK. Basicly the exhaust gasses will build up on the inside of the bumper with your stock exhaust, thus melting it. SVT exhaust can be had cheap if you can find and get it to you. Your options for aftermarket are mainly BAT , Trubendz ,and a custom set up. The stock SVT exhaust can be modified for sound and performance with aftermarket mufflers and resonators from Borla, Magnaflow, and the like. The SVT rear has dual cutouts for the exhaust already, and not taking advantage of that would be a sin. Hope some of this helps.

My old stock muffler developed a hole in the side of it, blowing exhuast right on my bumper. Took only one quick "spirited" drive (not even 3 miles long) and it was enough to melt and deform my bumper.

If your exhuast is blowing right on your bumper, you better drive it easy until you get it fixed.

SnafuFlux, when you say "mine is currently stock and I have the SVT exhaust" does that mean you are running one svt muffler....or are you running duals?

And if exhaust gasses are the cause of damaging the rear bumper than for now couldn't I just get a muffler tip to change the direction of the exhaust gases....or just get a universal aftermarket exhaust that would fit in the same place as my stock exhaust? I really want to get this svt rear but I'm wondering if I will cause any damage if I can't get and svt exhaust. Help
