Hello,

I have been searching a lot about PATS key. There are 2 types: system I where do you only need 1 key to progamm another key (for pre 98 models and early 98 models) and system II where do you need 2 keys to programm a third one.

My CSVT 98 was built in march 98 and I think I could have system I. I want to try the programming with only a key, but at the stealership they told me that I could damage the PCM if my car had system II, what should I do?

I also read in another forum that someone could programm a second key in system II using twice his only key.

Thank for your comments

You most certainly have the type that requires two working keys to add another key.

You won't hurt anything by trying to program the new key. It is worth trying just in case I'm wrong. The most that will happen is that you will have to walk away from the car for about 10 minutes if you fail, because for a short while the system will not recognize any key after you try to use an unprogrammed key.

The manual for my 98 SVT describes programming a new key using only a single key. Period. No other technique is described. I bought the car used, and only a single key and remote was provided. I went to the local dealer and asked if I really really really needed only one key. (My 2000 Focus with a similar key needs the two-key song and dance to reprogram.) The parts guy did not know the answer, but sold me a key anyhow. Worst case, he said, was that I'd have to bring the original and replacement key into the shop for them to reprogram. So...I did the single key reprogramming as described in the manual, and it was successful.
