They aren't going to warranty the clutch! I can garuntee that! Get a quote for the Synco replacement and a quote for the clutch while everything was out for the syncro repair.

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Yeah, I am aware that they won't cover the clutch and Chris has already told me that if they do not cover it I should buy a new one and he can install essentially free of charge since he'll be in there working on the tranny anyway.

My bigger worry at the moment though is that they won't cover the synchros. Apparently the technician or inspector CarMax sent over is contending that the worn clutch might have caused the synchros to wear prematurely, in which case they aren't responsible for any of it. The guys at Jerry's told them that in their estimation that was probably not the case and anyway there is really no way for them to tell which wore first and caused damage to the other component. Apparently worn synchros can damage the clutch and a worn clutch can damage the synchros but its impossible to tell which did which. So if CarMax comes down on the other side of the fence and denies the repairs I am going to have to give them a call and really lay in to them. I hope they do what's right!

Get a written statement from the technician and the serivce advisor at Jerry's now, so that if you have to take CarMax to court, or at least threaten to, you will have documentation by a trained professional.

Good luck; wish I knew a good lawyer in the area. Sometimes, just asking a lawyer to write a letter for you - pay him $75 or something - will go a very long way. But insurance companies are bastards when it comes to paying claims.

Excellent idea, will do.

Also, I just posted this in the Transaxle forum but thought I would toss it in here too to see if you guys know the answer to this question.

"I just ran a search but was unable to find anything on whether Ford ever upgraded the transmission in the MTX-75. I thought I read somewhere on here that they upgraded it for 2000. Is this true and if so what were the upgrades?

I ask because CarMax may be trying to screw me to the tune of $3000 and I need all the ammo I can get to tell them that the synchros in the pre-2000 tours are notoriously bad, proven (I hope) by the fact the Ford had to upgrade the tranny in 2000 to address the problem.

Anybody able to lend a little expert advice or their keen memory?"

Thanks guys (and any gals - are there any gals in the Capital CEG forum?)

Another update:

Surprise, surprise... CarMax has officially declined the tranny repair claim (they will cover the water pump) stating that a technician at Jerry's told them that the clutch caused the damage!

Well, CarMax is a bunch of bold faced liars because 5 minutes before I called them to find this out, I called Chris at Jerry's and he told me that the reason the tranny is grinding is because the blocking ring is broken causing the gears to spin simultaneouly when I shift. Not only did Chris not tell the CarMax inspector that the clutch caused the problem, but he showed the inspector the broken ring, demonstrated the grinding, and told me that it is impossible for the clutch to cause the blocking ring to break.

When I called CarMax I told them that their inspector was lying, so now Chris has to call CarMax to explain the real reason why the tranny in malfunctioning which is fully covered under my warranty.

Why do these corporate bastards make everything so difficult!

If they keep refusing the claim I am not only going to take them to arbitration, but will let them know that they have made a customer relations mistake because I plan on letting the 8000+ members of CEG know that their warranty isn't worth the paper its written on - Hurray for the internet and the power of instant mass communication!
