I'm sure it's not slow, but it probably lacks behind the svt as I'm sure it's heavier. Volvo really does a good job of mixing performance, luxury, and safety. With a little bit of work, I'm sure you could get it up to 300hp in no time.

i posted my impressions of the S40 in the New England forum.

Here:
S40 Driving Event

in my opinion, it is not worth $32k+.

Although I like the looks and features, I have a hard time paying $34k for a Focus. Even the Mazda 3 at or above $20k is streching it. But the praises are high for the 3. Hopefully the 05 Focus will be similar.

Not even a contest.

The T5 is heavier but has 236/218, much better gear ratios, and does 0-60 in 6.3, and Volvo is generally conservative with its' numbers.

20k for a mazda three is stretching it a bit. The average price, minus all the HID, Nav, and other annoying options gets an S sedan mtx for 16 or less.
The S40T5 starts at 25k and fully loaded can get up to 34k. Still pretty impressive car. It should weigh under 3000lbs.

S40 base starts off at right about 3000.

Curb Weight of the MTX T5 is 3386 according to the specs I saw. Seems heavy to me, that's 250 lbs more than my 6 which is a lot bigger, but I guess AWD is heavy.

I've driven a FWD s80 t6. I guess it would be quicker than the s40, though I don't think it's any quicker than a CSVT, if it is, it's only marginally quicker. Even though it's heavier, volvo tuned the suspension very well and it handles nicely. And the luxury part of it just makes it awesome. Though the price tag for a volvo is pretty hefty for a new one.

The S80 has considerably more power than the S40 (280/280), however it's quite a bit heavier, and doesn't put its' power down as well and is therefore much slower.

It would give an SVT a run for its' money. It'd be a driver's race, despite it's power advantage because of its' sheer weight

An 2004.5 S40 T5 on the other hand will demolish a CSVT, running at least a full second faster 0-60 and 1/4.
