Well, I decided to go the "extreme sport" route for my SVT, so I could be all phat and stuff.

Since it was a nice day out, I just put it on today. It's really cool. It took about 40 minutes to install without any tools, weighs about 100 lbs and I think it drops my MPG down about 3% on the highway. That's not so bad because I am not supposed to drive over 65 with this hooked up so I am told.

I had to call the manufacturer's tech support because I couldn't figure out how to strap it down right. So far I am pleased with the results and it even gets a few looks!

This thing works pretty good...I wasn't so sure about the idea of strapping 100# to my trunk, but so far it has worked out well. I can't picture having 3 bikes on there though that would be quite a load. With 2 bikes it was a bit hairy for me to stomach, but with 1 bike it was fine.

When I was driving today people driving SUVs were gawking at the setup, like "WTF is that...?"

I am kind of tempted to put a sign on the back that says "Maybe I should buy an $40,000 SUV to support my sporty and active life-style".

I picked the rack up at cactusbike.com for $100 or so...this rack goes for over $150ish at stores locally so it was a steal - even cheaper than I found used on ebay from personal sellers.

This marks the first time I've seen the old-school green plates on an SVT.

First time I've seen a 100+ lb wing that is halfway decent; congrats on the uniqueness!

wow that really does look heavy!

I gotta admit, I got suckered into thinking this was going to be a ricer park bench wing until I got further down in reading your post.
I was thinking "uh oh, this may start a flamewar", but then you said bike rack and I was like ohhhh duh.

It's not nearly as hairy as it looks...every clip that attaches to the car is coated with rubber coating & the load-bearing happens on the bumper. The feet on the trunk are more or less carrying no weight.

Honestly if my car was brand new, I would get a roof rack. My car has over 100k on it and its far from perfect...so I really don't mind the strap-on method for the bikes.

keeeeerist!!!
That car is slammed in the back?
Do you have subs AND the rack/bike?
Watch out for rubbing. Going that low, you might hear some rubbing going on during dips on the highway or regular bumps on streets.

Be careful!

Gotta love the offset of the Focus rims. With my 17s on a 45 offset I was rubbing with the sub in the back. I think I am going to keep the 16s, put some spacers to increase the track and ebay my 17s. Need to get swap out the Wintersports if I do that.

sounds like you had the same problem I had when I put my 17's on. 45 offset, IIRC.
No sub in the back....on the drive home, rubbin on dips on the highway. jacked the car up when I got home and hammered the fender lips in...NO more rubbin, even with people in the backseat.

When you hammered it did you have to trim the little metal lip that hangs under the 1/4 panel by the rear bumper cover?

I may give that a shot and see how it works...

No. You can though, but I did not.
I hammered that piece into the fender as much as I could without messing up the fender itself.
Its basically flat against the fender wall now.

In fact, when I did it, the driver side was more of a plastic soft feel to it with very little metal in it.
Almost like layers and layers of paint the clearcoat that was just hanging there but was pretty stiff.

Let me know if you want some pics...I can try to snap a few in a few days (won't be around the car till around friday or so).
