what kind of gains/losses can be expected from removing/pinning open the secondaries.

my IMRC has broken again and i just don't have the patience or the money to afford another one.

i know the car will bog down low but at least i'll have my top end back and besides that my reasoning is that the 2ndaries are already open at cruising speed on the highway so it shouldn't hurt things there

i'm not sure if i'll just unscrew them and pull all the butterflies out or if i'll just straight cut everything out

Pinning them open would show a big loss in low end, and be absolutely the same above 4k(assuming your imrc worked). Removing them would show a slight gain in the higher rpms, and an even bigger loss down low, with some possible drivability issues. I would just fix the imrc if possible and keep up on cleaning the secondaries.

I've been running my secondaries open at 1500 RPM lately... the loss is there but it's really not that bad... just downshift if you wanna accelerate.. did it w/ secondaries anyway.

to remove the rods, all you have to do is take out the screws holding in the secondary plates (easier said that done, best to have a striped screw removing tool) and pull the rods out, dont know if you will have to but i had to drill a hole in the side of the manifold to sort of push the bar a little to start it off

Try cleaning the intake manifolds. The driveability tech at my dealer says whenever he gets a Duratec with seconadary opening problems, he always takes the intakes apart and cleans them, because the butterflys get gummed up and sticky. My IMRC works when it wants, after it gets hot it stops working. Once it stops working all the time, I am going to clean my manifolds.

Interesting... Are you ramping up the timing down low to compensate? Fattenin up the A/F?

As far as removing the rod goes, what about the holes in the ports now that you've removed the rod? Wouldn't that be some kind of disturbance of airflow?

Umm... Still not your problem, but go ahead and clean that intake manifold. And when the secondaries still don't open, you'll be opening your IMRC box and doing a search in the forums for the real fix. Sorry for the sarcasm, but I don't get how people still think that the first culprit when secondaries don't open is a dirty UIM..

When the IMRC opens it adds 10 degrees timing. I think that's a major reason that people feel a terrible power hit when they pin the secondaries... because they aren't getting that 10 degrees of extra timing.

I'm just messing around with it because I'm trying to decide if I want to remove them or not. I'm gonna set them to open at like 500 rpm next so they are always open and see if I have any starting problems or anything like that. I have much fun with tuning ahead of me.

My IMRC had a broken gear in it I know what you mean
The funny thing is I had the car for a year and I thought it was just a slow car then a CEL poped up and I had a shop look at it. They fixed it and WOW it was like whole differant engine was installed
