95 Contour 2.0 Liter, 137,000 miles. Eng rpm drops to 500 rpm when stopped and in gear (auto trans). Problem is compounded when A/C compressor cycles on. The car has been to the dealer for this problem and they have been unable to fix it. I also had an independent look at it for a few days. The idle air control motor has been replaced/no fix. Idle problems seem to be a common complaint on this vehicle. Got tired of the Ford dealer throwing parts at the problem. Do any of you have any suggestions as to a fix? I have been driving the car with the problem for a couple of years now. Otherwise has been a decent vehicle. Thanks

Check EGR, I had similar problems..low idle then reving and stalling. Cleaned EGR and it hasnt done it yet, plus the check engine light is off, it was on for over a year. That seems to have fixed it though. I will be checking my IAC this weekend, just for the heck of it. Good luck..

How old is the timing belt? Plugs and wires?

There is a good chance that you have a vacuum leak in the
PCV hose under the exhaust manifold if the hose has never been replaced.

Thank you both for the advice. I will look at those suggestions. Was hoping you avid FOMOCO enthusiasts would would be able to steer me in the right direction.

Not sure what the EGA valve is, but the EGR valve is located near the intake manifold.
