Well I was planning on dropping my rebuilt engine and atx into the car this weekend. I picked up a new torque converter from O'Reilly. They asked me if I had a 10" or 11" tc. I asked them if I could just measure the diameter and they said sure. I measured it and it was 11". Took the converter home dropped it in the atx and it wobbles on the shaft....it is all the way in. If you turn it, you can hear the teeth skip....Called them back up and they just said this is weird! They are ordering the 10" Anyone know the story on this? I did read about having a stamp a or b, but mine had none. Oh well, another week delay......

Well, I checked the new tc, it has a code of C. I will be calling the parts house to look at my old unit. Since the bolt patterns are different on these, the tc that matches up to my old flywheel should be the correct one should it not? This new one does mount to my flywheel. I removed the oil pump rod so as to make it easier to check this unit when on all the way. The tc pushed down twice when I worked with it to seat it. When seated it is not meshing with the teeth inside, thus the tc makes a slight grinding noise when I rotate it.

The reason why I had to call Bulkpart and get that information is because DanG and I where working on replacing an engine/tranny in a Contour. The engine was siezed so bad that getting on it with an extended breaker bar with our full body weight could not break it loose. That meant we could also not access the TC retaining bolts and thus could not reuse his old TC. Lucky for this guy I had one in my garage sitting next to my spare CD4E. So, I was out a TC and needed to call to order one (still have to do so).

Anyway, to my point. We had a heck of a time getting the TC to seat properly in the tranny. Took us about 20 minutes to finally get it seating properly. Are you 100% sure it's seated fully? If it is and is making these noises, I think you may have gotten the wrong the TC by accident.

Well, I took the tc back to O'Reilly and got my money back. It turns out mine has a code c stamped on it. I'm going to try and find another source. this tc came out of their warehouse and not from the manufacturer. It looks like it was a prior return......

Good parts seem to be hard to get these days!! I also had to return a drive axle that I purchased from them yesterday. Looks like someone beat the hell out of it and striped the axle nut! And this is supposed to be rebuilt!!!

That is correct ... $139.99 + $45 core vs. BulkPart's $190 w/ no core. You will save on shipping because AutoZone is nearly everywhere.

Well I went to my Transmission parts house and purchased my rebuilt converter from there. I did have a tc with code C

I sheepishly have to admit that the first tc was probably fine. What threw me was that as I installed the tc, I worked with it until it was fully seated. Apparently if you seat it all the way, the outer splins on the turbin shaft hit the inner splins if you seat the tc as far as it can go...if you pull it out a bit (such as when it is mounted to the flywheel it turns fine.....Has anyone else noticed this!!!
