No you need to replace those gaskets if you get PO171 and PO174 at the same time. Seems like you might have gas tank leak, and/or loose gas cap.

At one time I did have both those codes at same time. When
I bought the car it had a modified air intake. Noticed the
MAF was on backwards.Fixed it-now i get codes po455 and p0171

Well you have PO171 - system to lean bank one. That could be, dirty MAF, bad O2 sensor, and a few other things. First off to clear the PO171 I would clean your MAF. You must use non-resiude eletric cleaner incase you didnt know. Secondly with the PO455, your looking for a gasoline leak, look under the car after you drive somewhere, look at the hose going from the cap to the tank for leaks.

thank you guys very much. I think I can get this fixed from the info you have given me. Just one more question. When I clean the MAF with a non resiude cleaner, do I spray it right on the sensor and do I have to unhook the battery?

Alright assuming you know where it is, you actually remove it and then spray it and then let it dry for a second, then reinstall it.
You dont have to disconnect the battery.
Also you car may stall a few times after removing the air tubing and stuff, just to let you know.
