Is there a post with step-by-step on the best way to replace the valve cover gasket on a 96 Contour Zetec 2.0, and is it as simple as it looks?
Thanks.

Yup it's very easy. pull valve cover off take old gasket out , clean where necessary put new one in and bolt it down from the middle out to 65 inch pounds basically just over hand tight.

Thanks very much Brandon and BBorges.
Really great pics!
We are having really great weather, clear and 82F highes for next 7 days. Looking forward to spending a little time on her. She's got 151,000 and has never had a problem. Suddenly the valve cover gasket is leaking and the driver's door won't open.
Thanks again.

Valve Cover Gasket Replaced - 1 small problem.
The gasket was $20.99. O'Reilly Auto Parts had it in stock. Neither Autozone, Pep Boys, nor NAPA had it in stock.
Since I also had the timing belt cover off, I added washers when replacing it in order to raise it up about a 20th of an inch as the belt was slapping the cover when engine was cold.
As near as I can tell, the factory fastened one of the 10 bolts without a sleeve, but with the rubber washer.
After removing the bolts, I saw 10 rubber washers, but there were only 9 sleeves. Thinking I dropped one perhaps, my wife and I combed the entire area for half an hour---no luck. I chose the front middle as the spot without a sleeve. I did add a washer the same size as the flared end of the sleeve. The bolts, sleeves and rubber washers all attach from the outside so nothing can fall off during removal or replacement.
If anyone happens to have a spare bolt sleeve, I would be most happy to buy it. I don't think this is a dealer item any longer. So far, no sign of any leak, but I do want to add a replacement sleeve.
Advice: Don't flip the cover over until you have removed the sleeves. The gasket came with new rubber washers so you can pitch the old ones. Some of mine had to be gently tapped out, while others just slipped right out.
Thanks again for all the advice!

depends, I thought this at first also. there are rubber o-rings at the bolt locations that get pinched when you tighten the cover down, if these are old and dried out the cover will start leaking like mine did after i openned it when changing the timing belt and reused the seal

yes you tighten the cover down from the middle out but don't go to the torque spec right off, you have to work up to it so that the cover remains parallel to the head, take you time when bolting it down

The valve cover gasket is $14.13 from www.fordpartsonline.com I would replace the original if you still have it, but a newer one probably can be removed and reused a few times. Make sure you clean the surfaces until they are shiny. No silicone or sealant stuff is needed,, though we had to use some where one of those little washers were missing.
