Having read post after post on the subject I am thinking of doing the rebuild on my wifes 2.5 1998.This is my question, how mechanically inclined does one need to do this job?I am adept at brakes, tune ups, exhaust systems.I guess my question is,is my basic mechanical knowledge enough for a job like this or am i just getting scared off because its engine repair.Any input would be appreciated.

I had 0 experience. I too was very afraid of messing up when I worked on the project. The one big problem that I had was losing the bolts. I dropped 2 of them and only recovered one. I don't know what happened to the other. Also, I got myself a bunch of sandwich bags and put the bolts in them and labeled them. That helped me out a lot later when I was reassembling them. Also, take a lot of pictures behind the IAC and next to the TB. That way you can see how the wiring is.

Other than that, the hardest part was the cleaning.

I had very little experience with the Duratec......I have ripped apart my top end about 4 times now.....I can now remove everything down to the lim in about 15 or 20 minutes when i have the correct tools.

It becomes a piece of cake after you do it a few times.
And the FAQ and HOW TO on the main page is a world of help.

I consider myself to be very mechinacally inclined having worked on cars for about 25 years.

The only trouble I had with the UIM/LIM rebuild was the fuel injector installation. You will need new o-rings for sure. Everything must be meticulously clean and lubricated properly prior to a very careful injector reinstallation.

If the injecotrs are not touched, the job is a piece of cake.
