I'm in the market for a used car here in Ontario, Canada. I stumbled across a Ford Contour SE (sorry not too familiar with the models but it's the top of the range 2.5 24V). It seemed to be in reasonable condition; a test drive didn't turn up any problems. The bodywork had a few small areas that looked to be the beginnings of rust. Mostly around window sills I think. The interior looked to be ok too; nothing too wrong there.

The price has just been dropped and the mileage is about 95,000km. I was tempted but I just couldn't decide if it was a safe buy. I'm fairly sure the 1 owner from new is a true history. I want a car that I can run for 2 to three years.

Thoughts appreciated. Thanks

I should clarify that I'm looking for comments on the 98 Contour; i.e. things to watch for, things to like/dislike about it, reasons to buy, reasons not to buy.

If you search on here in the FAQ section you should find something on common problems. I would say if you like the style of the car and the way it drives then go for it. Common problems that I know of are the waterpump and timing belt. I think all cars have problems with O2 sensors and PCV valves. There are some styling mods that can be done to the Contour if you have an intrest in that. I'm pretty happy with mine (listed in my sig) eventhough I've had a couple problems. If you go to Car Domain you can see some mods and such that others have done to Contours. Many of these guys are CEG members and there are a few in Ontario I know, search the chapter forums there to find ones near you.

Welcome to CEG!
