Who should be embarrassed?
Hey John, nice to see a Scooby on a Contour board. Perhaps the word "embarrassed" was too harsh. I just didn't expect to beat several people that had >1 wheel drive that also had >0 LSDs and >0 turbos on a wet course where horsepower had an advantage.

I'm everywhere
Autox is 90% car 10% driver... otherwise the Subarus would have taken all the top slots. I'm in my 2nd year, Brian is in his 2nd year, Ryan was driving Brian's car for the first time, Justin has only done 3-4 events, and the guy who turned a 65 in that WRX was on the stock, squishy, awful all season tires that aren't even good in rain. Dude can drive
It's just surprising to hear someone who has clearly been around the cones a few times say others should be embarrassed for not setting the world on fire. It's all about experience. Additionally, it didn't look like the rain was affecting stuff much... I didn't see anyone sliding out or anything, except for Dan's RX7 and the drifter in the 8-6.

Not to hijack the private thread, but I completely disagree, autox is 90% driver.

I think that's what he meant, and I agree, but still...an Impreza is damn near the perfect car for wet autocrosses (look at how they embarrass the vettes at wet ProSolos), and a Contour is damn near the least perfect, being wrong-wheel drive and with no limited slip. Those subie guys should take any and all opportunities for instruction at upcoming events, because my guess is they were either severely under-driving or severely over-driving their cars. Can't tell from just the times.
I feel a little bad for coming off in the other post like I'm knocking noobs which is not my intent. We all start somewhere and the last thing I want to do is discourage anyone from running for their first time for fear of "looking bad" which in my experience is far and away the reluctant new guys' biggest fear. Dissuading them is not me at all, I'm all about persuading them to the point that since nobody here stepped up to the plate, I've taken it upon myself to organize an autocross school in our region which hasn't had one in 2 years.
So guys, don't feel bad about veterans like me looking at your times with no context and saying you should be embarassed, you should be commended for getting out and doing it at all.

"Embarrassing" again was the wrong word to use.
However, this thread began asking how it rates to other cars out there. Clearly, better drivers have an advantage (almost) regardless of what they're driving. The VMP event just shows that the grocery getter can hang with better cars sometimes.
And my first autocross was October 2003 btw.

I could have sworn I responded to this a second ago. Anyhoo, I said it backwards; this is what happens when I don't have enough caffiene in the morning. 90% driver 10% car
And, to make my posts pretend to be on topic: you can be regionally competitive in anything. It's not til you get to the Tours, Pros and whatnot where car dominance really shows.
edit: I get it. I previewed, and didn't post. Damn you contour.org!!

Until you get to the National level, the car doesn't mean that much.
Our chapter of the SVTOA gets together with the Porsche Club and when I (with only about 25 auto-x's experience) beat about 3/4 of the Poesche's, it's gotta be the driver!

Raw. They don't class the cars except by street or race tires and non-Porsche so there is no PAX. I DO run R compounds.
