3 quarts of appropriate fluid. The classic tranny cocktail calls for synthetic ATF. Mobil 1 and Redline ATF work well. Yes, that's ATF, as in Automatic Transmission Fluid. Recently, many have tried Redline MTL, which is a synthetic gear lube that matches the specs for this transaxle. Redline will point out that MTL is not recommended for this application, but those that have tried it have said it works better than the other fluids available, including Ford's synthetic "honey" colored fluid. Ford's fluid (part #XT-M5-QS) runs nearly $20/qt, so MTL is quite attractive. Another option is ATF+3, a Chrysler spec'ed ATF that has the friction modifier already in it. It is much cheaper than the synthetics, but will require more frequent changes. In theory, any 75W90 gear oil will work as long as it is not rated GL-5, which contains additives that will damage the internals. GL-4 is the spec to satisfy for fluids.
Obviously this is from the how-to, so which do you perfer personally-mobil 1 ATF or Redline MTL?

Redline.
In my tranny with 80k miles on it, I installed the Mobil 1 ATF + FM. Within 2 months my third gear syncros were gone. Coincidence or not, I don't know, but I've been happy with MTL in my new trans.

I used the Redline, and I couldn't be happier. Now that the weather has warmed up, it shifts sooooo smooth. It's like night and day. I still had the sticking going into first when it was cold out, but only for a min or two.

I wish... I drive past Summit Racing on my way home from school, so I got it there. $7.95 a quart. You can get it online too.

Just finished changing the fluid. I used the Redline MTL and even though the old fluid only had 3,000 miles on it(Just replaced clutch) I can still feel a difference.
