I have a '99 Contour SVT with 62,000 miles on it. I noticed recently that it was becoming very difficult to shift into first when cold - not all the time but maybe 1/3 of the time. After dropping my car off for its 60,000 mile service today I asked them to check the clutch as well and they said it needs to be replaced - at a cost of ~$1600. I don't drive this car very hard any more - first 15,000 I pushed it hard but after that have not driven it particularly hard. Is it common for the clutch to wear out this quickly on the SVT? It seems a remarkably short time to burn out a clutch. I see other posts here saying that they have SVT's with 120,000 on the clutch with no problems. The cost associated with replacing the clutch seems astronomically high as well.

Welcome to CEG!! I hope youre enjoying your SVT. Yeah take a look at that. That has nothing to with the clutch going bad. The 2 ways that you know its bad is try taking off in 5th gear and if the car stalls its good. If not and it slips while its doing that or driving . Its bad. So there's nothing wrong with your clutch. Dealers are there to stiff you. Thats why i dont go there.

don't make a $1,600 mistake,I just made a $1,000 mistake to have my clutch replaced only to find out it tranny not the clutch ,I think in most cases bad clutch only sliping, also it's unlikely the oil is the problem if shifting has been fine in the last 60k miles, you may want to wait till it get worest(sometime its hard to see untill something is broken)than takr it to a tranny shop, they should be able to put a new clutch in without labor cost to you when do the tranny.
