Hi, in about 2 weeks I will own a 2000 Contour. I've been thinking about what I will do with the sound system but I'm a little confused right now. Some web sites say that 6x9 speakers can fit in where the 6x8 factory speakers are in the Contour, while others say that only 6x8's or smaller can fit. I talked to someone at Circuit City and they said they would have to see the car but probably only 6x8's or smaller would fit.

Could someone please explain what the deal is with which speakers will fit?

Also the Circuit City salesperson recommended either Pioneer 6x8's or Polk 5x7's, and said either would sound about the same. Is this true? I'd like to use Polk 6x9's but if they won't fit, I'll either have to go with the Pioneer 6x8's or the Polk 5x7's (or something else, if you could suggest anything).

I'll also being adding a new CD player (not sure what kind yet), and a Kenwood 4 channel 280 watt amp that I already have in my current car. Later a sub and another amp may be added but that would be a ways down the road.

Thanks, any opinions are appreciated.

You're a nimrod! just kidding.

You can fit "most" 6x9s in the front door without modification. The rear requires some mods on the door panel to make them fit.

If you decide you want to go with the other two choices you mentioned, I would probably recommend the polks over the Pioneers...Will they sound the same?...probably close but all speakers have their own sonic characteristics that are created by cone materials, surround materials, tweeter types, etc...

Thanks for the advice! I forgot to mention the Contour is an SE, I'm not sure if that makes a difference as far as what fits. Also the the Kenwood amp in my current car that I will be putting in the Contour only has 25 watts rms per channel. Do you think this is enough for say, Polk 693's? How about Polk 5x7's? Or should I bridge it into two channels at 70 watt rms per channel, and then add another amp for the other pair of speakers? I think that would be approaching the max of what the Polk 693s can handle but I'm not sure... Thanks again.

It should work fine. The polks have pretty good sensitivity and the 25 should drive them nicely.

I got the polk from circut city a while ago. They were deffinitly better then stock. But they didn't do it for me. I put the polks in the back doors and put some dbs speakers (component system) in my front doors. Much, much happier with those then the polk. But they are a little more expenssive. If you're looking good bass, I don't think the polks are the way to go. You should hook a component system.

Thanks to those who have replied. I have one more question to anyone who has Polk 693a's -was any modification to the front doors needed when putting these in or is this one of the types of 6x9's that can fit in front without modification? Just wondering because I have Polk 693's in my current car and was thinking about putting them in the 00 Contour.

I don't remember which polks I have, but I had to drill one hole on each door to fit them.

It's all about balance.

If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?
