OK I have a wack of amber LEDs. I pulled apart a truck tailight that was supposedly shot. They are 12V as confirmed by my computer power supply. (to lazy to go outside in the cold.) Now aside from new turn signal indicators that I wish to fab into my rear view mirrors where else can I make use of these. I wish they were a different color but free tends to limit options. Ideas?

if you only held the LEDs in for a second, that might be why you see them at 12v, try powering them with a 5v wire, or the 3v wire from your comp. If the LED is getting hot when using the 12v, even a tiny bit, its over powering, since its from a tail light chances its 12v.

Hmmmm interesting. Hadn't thought of that. Which computer wire is 3v?

You are right they over heat. Anything I can do to make them work still?

Resistor. 280 Ohms work, sometimes like a 500 ohm. Resistor goes on the positive lead.

God graced us with intelligence, let's use it.

First I need to verify the voltage of these though right? I do still have the resistors that came with the led lights. Not sure what is what though as there was more then one I think. Will it matter how many LED's are hooked up at once? Or will one resistor work for however many I run on a line of them?

Best way is to use a resistor for each because i'm guessing the resistors that they gave you won't handle a very high power. Just branch the hot lead into parallel with each diode, resistor setup in series and should run fine.
