For the past few oil changes I've been using Valvoline Durablend 5-30. I just don't know if its really worth the extra $ though. My idiot newbie question is this: will it harm the engine to switch back to regular oil from a synthetic blend? If its OK do I need to switch back gradually? What kind of oil do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for any input.

You can switch back at your next oil change completely to conventional dino oil. You can always switch to dino oil. At high miles, it may not be a good idea to switch from dino oil to full synthetic.
Everyone seems to have their own favorite oil. I like Mobil dino oil.

Keep an eye on your oil level for awhile though. If you leave Valvoline you will be getting a different additive package (though most likely weaker unless you use a diesel spec oil) which could clean other items that your current oil cant.
When I switched to Royal Purple from Mobil 1 in November, I was shocked to see that I had lost a half quart at 3000, refilled it and at 6000 it was still on the full mark. The guy at the store said he noticed similar drops when he switched his Ranger over to it.

I just switched my oils and poured in Kendall GT-1 10W-40 oil, and it seems to much more suitable for Duratec than Castroll RS 0W-40.

10W40 is a huge mistake on this engine, especially in your climate.

Big Jim is absolutely correct. Spec on the Duratec calls for an oil weight no higher than 30.
Regardless of whether you're running dino or synth, in a cold-weather climate like Findland's, any oil weight higher than 30 definitely will cause oil starvation and result in engine damage.
