All of you have offered suggestions in regards to my 1998 SE/V6 with the auto transmission. I just got it back from a very reputable transmission shop and they replaced the "gear selector sensor". This was the code the transmssion was giving out. They also said that the temperature coolant sensor for the transmission needs to be replaced as well. They do not do this since it is not transmission work, rather a sensor located underneath the hood. They said the computer cannot tell how warm/cold the transmission is. The car contimues to "slip" sometimes between 3rd and 4th. Can anyone give me a part number for this? Could I replace it myself? And where is it located?

Are you sure they are not talking about the "Coolant Temp Sensor", which is located on the engine? Reason I ask is this...
There is a "Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor" (aka, "TFT"), which if I remember correctly (it's too early in the morning!) is located on the solenoid block of the transmission. This sensor, senses the temp of the transmission fluid and dictates how much fluid should flow through the system at any given temp. Cold, it flows less fluid. Hot it flows more fluid.
Now, if this sensor is bad. That could explain your slipping issue because the ECM and tranny thinks the transmission is cold all the time. It will not allow the proper fluid to flow through the transmission, hince your slips.
I am not totally sure if the ECM actually uses the engines Coolant Temp sensor for any functions of the tranny.
I would go back and have another talk with the tranny shop, just in case and to clear things up a bit. If it is the TFT sensor, the solenoid block is located on the valve body. You will have to remove the valve body cover, then 4 bolts (I think). Change out a few gaskets and that's that. You will have to be prepared to also remove the battery and possibly move the A/C Dryer out of the way.
I'm not real sure about the price of this sensor, but IIRC, it is somewhere in the neighborhood of $200.
Good luck!

Yep, there are 4 bolts holding the selonoid pack on. There is also a gasket screen that goes along with it. 95 selonoid pack is around 130, afterwards around 170 at www.bulkpart.com

Thanks to all... I guess I am really at a crossroads in regards to this transmission. I have already replaced the VSS and the gear selector switch. I will contact the transmission shop to find out if they meant the collant sensor or the transmission fluid temperature sensor. If it is the fluid sensor, I am not sure I want to spend the $200.00 and HOPE it is the problem. The car "slips" badly between 3rd and 4th. And when you go up a hill it hunts back and forth and then goes "bam" and the whole car shakes and it shifts in to some gear. I am thinking about a rebuilt transmission since the car has only 56,000 documented miles. Does anyone know a good online transmission rebuilder? I have been looking at phoenixhardparts.com online. I am assuming if I make this investment it will be a good car like my other Contours. I am also located in Southern California, and does anybody have any transmission shop reccomendations that would install a transmission?

If you go the full rebuild route, you still SHOULD replace the solonoid pack. If you do it now yourself and it solves your problem great! If not all you lost is some time in installing it and now KNOW that you really need a full rebuild job....

One thing I forgot, If you replace the solonoid pack yourself, also put a transgo shift kit in the valve body. This could also be part of your problem and whether you do a full rebuild or not, really has to be done. You do not need to pull the trans to rebuild the valve body, it is in the same area as the solonoid pack. You can get the shift correction kit at www.bulkpart.com for around 30 dollars

The trans temp sens is located on the solenoid pack but has nothing to do with shifting or normal operation. Rather, it is a warning to the PCM of fluid over temp. A slipping tranny is usually caused by low line or control pressure, bad clutch packs, sticky valve body.
Go to a shop and have them connect a pressure gauge and go for a ride. This will tell you more then the codes will.

If you can find a reputable trans shop that knows what they are doing great! Otherwise I recommend start with the shift correction kit (which is must) and solonoid pack. If this doesn't cure your problems, they you will have to pull the trans for a complete rebuild.

Thanks again to all, So, If I do the soldnoid pack and the shift kit, and it does not work, then I could use these parts in the rebuilt transmission? Is this correct?

Chuck that is correct...But wait....I did some checking the ECT coolant temperature sensor does control the converter clutch. If they told you to replace the coolant sensor, then I would replace this first. This is the one for the computer ECT not the one for the temperature gauge. It is located on your water crossover tower if you have a V6.
