Just thinking out loud here..... Has anyone thought of converting our beloved Tour'to rear wheel drive, sort of like what they did with the Focus??????  More or less daydreaming here, I haven't even started taking measurements yet...engine compartment, rear end, etc.... Thinking somewher along the lines of a 5.0/auto. Who knows I might just get a bug up my ass someday and try this.  Like I said, just thinking out loud...

Why must people always post their crazy/dumb ideas, we get people saying they want to convert their ATX to a MTX. Geez people be realilistic.

go easy on the newb...its not that dumb of a question. Afterall, the focus crowd has a rwd conversion kit. Its certainly possible, just not practical. Same thing with the ATX to MTX...the MTX is the better option, but its not practical to convert.

Have you seen the Contour's engine bay ? Good luck cramming a V8 in there.
If you want a cheap project, find an older RX-7 and drop a Ford or Chevy V8 into it. 12's for under $5k.

I never said it would be practical... If being practical is the case, you could argue that point all day with everyone doing the 3.0/turbo/supercharged swap. Practical..NO...Cool as hell...YES....something you want....Yes.
I have been on here enough to realize that you are going to have people chime in with the "do a SEARCH" or the whole practical argument. Btw. I did do a search, but apparently I did not put in the right criteria.
I am just asking if it is possible Yes/No? If so, what type of modifications are needed?
Any constructive criticism is always appreciated.

Barriers that have been noted:
1. Center tunnel too small (fab it!)
2. Gas tank, etc in the way (can you say, "racing fuel cell?"
3. Engine bay too short (more fab work!)
Of course it's possible. All you have to do is watch Monster Garage to know that.
Practical? Easy? Cheap? No.
Worth it? That's up to you, but I'd say the Contour is one of the best-balanced, best-handling FWDs out there, and the payoff would be minimal.
Function before fashion.

On a kinda on-topic note, because many former 'Tour owners own Mazda6s, I'm waiting patiently for someone to try a RWD/AWD conversion for the Mazda6. The platform is designed for all configurations, there are AWD Wagon Mazda6s in Europe, and AWD Jaguars built on the same platform. No one's tried it with the 6s (V6) in the US yet. If you're bored and got money, feel free to give it a shot.
