Okay, I have a 98, V6 automatic with 89k miles. I have a KKM Intake, I removed the resonator, and I have a Flowmaster muffler.

Like many Contour owners, I have the CEL. I had the O2 sensor replaced, but the CEL is still there. Even after a tune-up (new plugs, plug wires, PCV valve, oil, and fuel filter), I am getting the CEL.

I've lost faith in my mechanic, now, because he seems to want to get the car out of the shop rather than do the work. He ran the codes and told me that the EGR is returning a bad signal and that the O2 sensor in the "second bank" is running lean.

With relation to the CEL, what I notice about the car from driving it is as follows:

1) Sometimes a rough idle when put in gear
2) Unusual smell to gas (bad gas smell)
3) Sluggish and lack of smoothness at lower RPMS, and it doesn't have the kick at the higher RPMS.

When I reset the computer (pulling the PCM memory fuse), the car runs fine for about a half hour, then the light comes on and everything gets bad.

I've read alot about the IMRC module, EGR valve, and the infamous O2 sensors. However, I am no mechanic. What do I do? Any help is appreciated.

This link has some info on cleaning the throttle body and EGR passages. You may be getting a CEL from a blocked EGR passage. You can do some searching on CEG to see if you see any more. But you might have your mechanic
1: Clean the throttle body and the EGR passages behind the throttle (the 4th photo down, you see those blackend groves? Those are the passages. They get gunked up pretty bad with carbon & gunk.
2: Maybe a new EGR valve while you're at it. Might also have him check those vacuum lines going into the EGR valve as well.
3: The IMRC opens your secondaries. This link gives a little info on that.

Good luck!

OH, and unplug your battery positive for 20 minutes when doing this to clear any stored fault codes in the computer.

Those are good suggestions from Nate. But before you do any of that stuff, find an Auto Zone or other parts store that will read the CEL codes for free. Bring them back here & do a search for your particular CEL code (i.e. "P0402"). Start filtering through the posts until you find something similar to your simptoms & read about the fix.

Here's the coolest part. When you find that fix, if you have any questions about your diagnosis, or proceedures to solve your problem, you post your questions.

You will learn so very much about your car, save tons of time & money on the maintenance & repair, and get to know some really good people. Yes, I'm hooked.

Welcome, good luck, & enjoy!

Well, I'm gonna give the EGR value a try...but where is the IMRC? Is it under that plastic peace that says "Duratec?"
