Can't say for sure without looking at the exhaust system, but I'd guess your main cat blew a seam.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Not really. You can have the whole exhaust setup replaced for $400, including the cat. You should be able to get just the cat replaced for $150 if that is what the problem is.
There is really now way to tell without getting under the car & looking. You SHOULD seriously consider looking under the car or meeting up with a NY CEGer in your area to have it looked at & properly diagnosed before you spend any money. Even the $150 for a cat is wasted money if that is not the problem.
At the very least, take it to a muffler shop and ask for a QUOTE. They'll charge you next to nothing (if anything at all). Do NOT get an "estimate", get a QUOTE. When you get it, ask them to SHOW you where the damage is so you can see any holes or loose bolts or whatnot for yourself. If you make them show you what the problem is, they'll be less likely to take advantage of you - especially if you take a picture or two of whatever they point out. Catch my drift?

Same thing happened to me today, same exact symptoms. The bolts that fasten the cat. conv. to the front muffler pipe have rusted and broken off, so the two pieces have seperated.
My problem is that I cannot get the bolts/studs out of the cat. They are either screwed in, or have splines and are pressed in...I cannot tell which. But no amount of twisting with Vise Grips or hammering seems to work to get them out.
Any suggestions ?
I am not stalking you, I just happened to get stuck to your shoe.
