I have a sony xplode 42 watt x 4 head unit and 6"x8"rear speakers pioneer premier and 6-1/2" component speakers for the front with tweeter also pioneer premier.Should I buy a 4 channel amp for them or run them off of the head unit amp. I haven't mounted the 6-1/2" yet I have the 6" x 8" in the front now and am going to put those to the rear and the 6-1/2" in the front.I got the component set for 99.99 and the 6"x8" for 49.99.

First off, a deck will never really produce anything more than about 20x4 watts rms (max is a useless measure).

Plus, it's "dirty" power with lots of THD and not much amperage.

A nice outboard amp rated at a measly 25w rms will sound light years better than any deck.

BTW, I wouldn't run a set of components off the deck. You'll be very disappointed in the results.

At best, a deck is good for some inexpensive, efficient coaxial speakers as "level 1" upgrade over stock.

yeah, that is what I did. I bought some cheap-ass Cerwin vega mids from Best Buy, and for now am using the deck to power them. I will be adding some good component sets soon, and plan on upgrading to a high quality class A or A/B amp.

Pioneer DEH-7000R, Cirwin Vega Crap Co-ax, Lanzar 1200D, Audiomobile MASS 2012 S24. (www.audiomobileinc.com check them out, sub is louder and sounds better than many pairs of 12's hehe)

I have 4 Mass 2012's hooked up to two PPI PC2600 amps. thank god for dynamat. As far as the door speakers, I just bought 4 polk DX7 6x8"s and a fosgate punch Punch 400a4 amp. The performance has been very solid so far, not competition but the sound quality is definitely impressive (although its just a temporary set-up). I paid around $400 for the polk speakers and punch amp at www.onlinecarstereo.com.
