I was thinking of buying a cheap floor jack so that i could do more minor repairs at my garage. I was wondering if this was an ok one. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00950181000 I'm mostly going on price and at 15 bux it's the cheapest one. although i don't want anything that'll drop the car.(especially one me) I also have jack stands to put the car on after i jacked it up. Just wondering if that one will lift the tour.

Yup, should be fine. Just make sure you use it on a level surface, because if you don't, it could roll on you.

It will do fine to get the car up so you can use your jack stands. Never get under the car without using the jackstands.

Any jack is an OK jack. I use a $10 special from wal-mart. Always use jack stands no matter what. No new jack (unless something is horribly wrong) is just gonna drop the car. And hydraulic jacks usually slowly lower the car when they go bad, so even if you are using just the jack, you would notice it going down.

There are three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way!
Isn't that just the wrong way?
Yeah, but faster!

This appears to be basically the same as the cheep Walmart Jacks. I actually would recomend you look for a long travel version of this jack. The one I have was something like $10 more than this one but it's lift range starts lower and finishes higher. That makes it much more versitile. I think mine is something like 4 1/2" to 17"

Make sure the lower and upper limits are good for you. I got a cheap one at Sears and had to go back and exchange it for a better one. The one I got the first time wouldn't go low enough for me to use.

In my autos class.... teacher has us shift the car to N, and make sure parking brake is off, and then put some peices of wood around the opposite tire...

In the 80's I was working on a car with a friend. we had the car jacked up with just the hydraulic floor jack. The jack blew an internal seal and that car slammed down to the floor fast. Nobody was under it, but I will never forget it!

If you have a Checker, Kragen or Schucks in your area they have jack/jack stand sets for pretty reasonable prices. I got a set at my local Schucks, it's a bigger jack but at least it won't blow a seal like my little Sears one did.
