I just finished putting a new timing belt on my 1995 Contour Zetec and had a questions about it. After putting everything back together and firing in up the belt immediatly move to the back side of the pulleys, at least at the top. It now rides the very back of the pulleys, maybe even hanging over 1/32" I first noticed this and disassembled and turned the belt so it was facing the other way, but noticed to difference. Is this normal?

The car will also fires right up and runs very smoothly, but once you turn it off and try to restart, it is very hard to start. I actually have to pump it while it cranks in order to get it to fire. Once started it runs very smoothly as well. Is this related to a timing issue? Thanks.

Took the 'Tour out for her maiden voyage and snapped the belt. Apparently the thing chewed itself up from the rear from rubbing on something. The whole trip lasted less than 10 miles. Any ideas as to why this happened to prevent it from happening when we re-do this? Thanks in advance.

Well now you need a camshaft/crankshaft alignment tool to put the belt back on correctly. You can rent them from Autozone for free, just need to leave a depiost.
You may have done serious engine damage, your vavles may have hit your cylidners and created a whole crap load of problems, it has happened to many people here they have to pay between $800-$1800 to fix the engine.
Anyways when you put the belt back make 100% sure #1 cylidner is TDC and the camshaft and crankshaft are perfectly aligned.
Also did you replace the tensioner when you replaced the belt that is a very good idea to do, so that doesnt mess up.

The valves have not hit the pistons on anyone's zetec on here due to a broken timing belt. (Though it's never been fully proven to not be a possibility, it hasn't happened to any of us) What is this tool from autozone you speak of? Yeah, you need something to lock both cams, the crank pulley isn't gonna turn if both cams are locked. Yeah, it is a good idea to replace the tensioner, as well as the idler pulleys.

Autozone I went to said "Duh... all you do is align the timing marks, lemme check the rental tool sheet, nope, we dont have it, just align the marks" (hint my signature...)

Really it depends on your pulley condition,, because of limited time, etc. I just bought both pulleys on the tensioner and replaced them all. Usually only one of the idler pulleys and tensioner need to be replaced, sometimes neither, etc.

If you pick up a Haynes manual it describes in detail the tool. You can even show the yahoos at Autozone the picture and the Ford part number for it. I beleive that it is called the Cam alingnment tool.
