Hey All! After too many months, I finally bit the bullet and took my car to a shop to get the timing right. Now it runs like it did when it was my mom's. <-- Me Including everything (mods, labor, plates, intital cost) I only have $1300 in the car. I do have to rag on the shop though. When I brought it in, they asked if I used the tool to keep the cams still, which I did, and then they asked if I locked the crank in place Is there a way to do this? Something about sticking something in the block to keep it from turning? It seemed like a bunch of BS. Also, when they were done (a week and a half later for three hours of work) the "mechanic" told me that the adj. cam gears were a bad idea because they mess with the MAP sensor. I thought we only had a MAF? Oh well. It was worth the $200 to get the car running right, but whether they were making stuff up or not I'm not going back because of how long they took. I am a real CEG'er! -O-

Yes there is a way to lock the crank, but you don't have to do that when doing the timing belt. If the cams are locked, the crank pulley isn't gonna turn, if it does... then your tool broke and possibly the cams will be damaged.... And don't listen to what any normal mechanic tells you about modifications (especially on newer cars). Adjustable cam gears are fine (when installed properly) and don't do anything other than change valve timing.

I think you can hold the crank pully in place w/ a breaker bar or something like that. I don't think he's BSin' you.

Correct (at least for the Duratecs, yes. I don't know of any instances in which Ford uses a MAP, so I'm ~99% sure I'm correct) ...but I could be wrong.
Glad you got 'er up and running!

That's what I tried to do when I did it my self. He said something about sticking something in a slot in the block to keep it from moving. I am relativly new to the car thing, but if there was a slot in the block, wouldn't the oil drain out? The only thing that was right about the shop was the price. Even the receptionist was talking to her friend ont he phone while I waited to be served .

Ford sells the tool to lock the crank. Though it's not needed for a simple timing belt change, or timing adjustment. It is useful when doing a rebuild.

It helps when you are changing cam gears.

Yeah I guess it could,, when putting them back on,, though you could also get the cam holding tool (not just the bar in the back of the cams). And I can think of way or two to remove the gears without either tool. Though I paid someone to do it for me, they did it way quicker and better than I could have.

I think something happened when I was trying to get everything put together. Chalk it up to lack of experience. So we don't have a MAP sensor? If I am going to trash their name, I want my facts to be straight.

thanks for discouraging me from ever doing mine anytime soon.
no we have an MAF (mass air flow sensor) not an MAP...isn't that what Hondas have? Or is it, MAS? One of the two...
